El Tule, Mitla, rugs and Hierve el Agua in one day
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
The classic eastern-valley circuit joins five very different stops: the Tree of Tule, weaving in Teotitlán del Valle, the archaeological site of Mitla, Hierve el Agua and a mezcal distillery. It works geographically, but it is a long day. The best-selling 11-hour Tule, Mitla, rugs, Hierve el Agua and mezcal trip is honest about that length.
What fits and what feels rushed
El Tule is naturally a short stop: see the immense ahuehuete, walk around the church square and continue. Teotitlán deserves enough time to understand wool preparation, the pedal loom and natural dyes such as cochineal and indigo. A demonstration is useful; a sales stop presented as culture is less so. You are never obliged to buy.
Mitla cannot be reduced to “another ruin”. Its geometric stone mosaics and tomb-related architecture differ sharply from Monte Albán. INAH currently lists 8 a.m.–5 p.m., last entry 4:30 p.m., with official admission of MXN 105 for Mexican visitors and MXN 210 for foreign visitors. Check whether your tour price includes it.
Hierve el Agua needs the largest time block because the mountain road, viewpoints and pools cannot be hurried comfortably. The final mezcal stop can be illuminating if it explains production; after a long day, it can also become a fast tasting and shop visit.
Tour or car?
The tour removes navigation, parking and the obvious conflict between tasting mezcal and driving. Its weakness is fixed time at every stop. A car gives control and an early Hierve el Agua arrival, but one person must abstain from alcohol and manage local charges. If you choose to drive, compare Oaxaca rental cars and verify insurance, deposit and fuel terms with the supplier.
A better way to plan the day
Choose the full circuit if this is your only free day and variety matters more than depth. Split it into two days if archaeology or craft is a priority: Mitla and Teotitlán together, then Hierve el Agua with one mezcal stop. That turns five checkboxes into places you can remember.
