Oaxaca’s historic centre and Santo Domingo on your own

Oaxaca’s historic centre works well without a tour because the essential route is compact. Begin at the Zócalo, walk the pedestrian Macedonio Alcalá towards Santo Domingo, then choose between the Museo de las Culturas and a longer loop through neighbourhood streets and markets. The mistake is trying to treat church, museum, garden, markets and every gallery as one quick stop.
Santo Domingo is several visits
The Templo de Santo Domingo, the former convent housing the Museo de las Culturas and the ethnobotanical garden share a complex but not one entrance or timetable. The museum and the garden have their own opening days, hours and admission, and the garden is generally visited only on a guided tour. Check the official INAH page before going; do not assume the church schedule applies to the museum or garden.
The museum gives the strongest historical framework, including objects from Oaxaca’s archaeological sites and the former convent itself. Allow time for the upper-level views. The church remains an active religious space, so services take priority over sightseeing.
Build a route with contrast
From Santo Domingo, return along Alcalá but turn into quieter blocks rather than walking the same line. The Textile Museum and contemporary galleries add manageable indoor stops. Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre markets provide food and daily commerce, though they are busiest around lunch. Ask before photographing vendors.
When a guide is worth it
The two-hour historic-centre walk with a local guide is useful on a first morning: it explains building materials, civic history and street details that a map cannot. Check the language and whether entry fees are included. It will not replace a slow museum visit.
Go independently if you prefer museums, sketching or frequent food stops. Wear shoes for uneven paving, carry water and leave the hottest part of the afternoon for an interior. One well-paced axis from Zócalo to Santo Domingo reveals more than a rushed checklist across the whole centre.
